Uber and Lyft Shared Ride Option Returns to Logan

Cheaper, more eco-friendly Ride Share now available

As part of the agreement reached between the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) and Uber and Lyft back in March, Shared Rides have returned at Boston Logan International Airport.

The eco-friendly option allows multiple Logan passengers headed to or leaving from similar locations to use one vehicle. This option, which restarted in July, is less expensive for passengers and reduces the number of vehicles on the road.

Uber Share and Lyft Shared product trips will be subject to a $1.50 per-party fee, instead of the standard $5.50 per trip fee.

“Shared rides reduce trips and emissions. Massport’s commitment to greener ride share options is a win for travelers, visitors and the environment,” said Transportation Secretary & CEO Monica Tibbits-Nutt.

“Massport was able to negotiate the return of these services not only giving passengers another choice when getting to and from Logan, but also a greener and less expensive one,” said Massport CEO Rich Davey. “Our agreement with Uber and Lyft is intended to improve the rider experience, while helping to mitigate traffic around the airport and our surrounding neighborhoods. We thank Uber and Lyft for their collaboration and commitment to our passengers.”

In addition to relaunching Shared Ride products, the terms of the March agreement included the following:

Massport to pilot expanded curbside access for certain rideshare users;

  • Uber and Lyft committed to exploring a last-mile pilot to encourage the use of Logan Express between the bus terminals and the customer’s origin or destination;
  • Uber and Lyft have enhanced their Rematch feature by extending the time window in which drivers who complete a drop-off can accept a pickup request to improve customer service and reduce vehicle trips leaving Logan without passengers;
  • Uber, Lyft and Massport committed to developing an urban shuttle service at Boston Logan, providing riders with an affordable curbside shuttle option while further reducing single-occupancy trips;
  • Uber, Lyft, and Massport will collaborate on other pilot initiatives to enhance the customer experience, reduce congestion, and promote green vehicles.

“The return of Uber Share at Boston Logan International Airport is a great win for passengers, Massport, and the environment,” said Katie Franger, Public Affairs Manager for Uber. “This service provides a more sustainable and affordable travel option, reducing both traffic congestion and emissions while lowering costs for travelers.”

“We're excited to bring back our shared ride options at Logan, offering passengers a more affordable and sustainable way to travel,” said Brandan Joyce, Lyft Senior Public Policy Manager.” This collaboration with Massport allows us to enhance the rider experience while supporting the airport's continued growth and success.”
