Sustainability

Recycling

Massport is committed to improving the way it handles materials from all aspects of operations—from passenger travel through tenant operations.

Since 2013, Massport has been implementing its single-stream recycling program at Boston Logan and all other Massport facilities. Single-stream recycling means that all recyclable materials are collected in the container and are later sorted at recycling facilities. Please help Massport to recycle responsibly, and be conscious of what gets tossed in the recycling bins.

Single-Stream Recycling

To learn what you can and cannot recycle as a passenger or employee at Massport, please refer to the Recycle Smart Recycling Guide (the guide is available in eight different languages).

Other Recycling Efforts

In addition to single-stream recycling, Massport has programs to recycle other materials, such as food/organic waste, construction and demolition materials, scrap metal, used cooking oil, wooden pallets, batteries, electronic waste (e-waste), and more.

Hydration Stations

Reuse and refill your water bottle at water filling stations (also known as hydration stations) located across Massport’s aviation properties. Hydration stations provide free, clean drinking water to travelers and help to reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles in the waste stream, saving millions of pounds of plastic waste each year. Massport continues to install these stations as we renovate and upgrade buildings.

Liquid Collection Stations

Liquid collection units are located throughout Boston Logan terminals at security checkpoints. Before entering a security checkpoint, travelers can empty beverages into these bins. After going through security, travelers can refill their bottles at hydration stations. This helps to reduce waste and promote sustainable choices. In addition, diverting liquids from the waste stream helps to improve recycling by reducing liquid contamination.

Oscar

Oscar is an AI sorting mechanism from IntuitiveAI that increases waste diversion rates and tracks specific waste metrics. There are three Oscars located at Boston Logan International Airport. These recycling units provide Massport the opportunity to increase recycling success throughout the terminals, improve waste data accuracy and showcase our commitment to sustainability. Check out Oscar, located at B25, C24 and E8.
