What does Massport do to limit fuel spills at the airport? (expand)

Massport conducts no aviation fuel storage or handling at Logan. ALl aviation fuel at Logan is handled and dispensed by an airline consortium, individual air carriers or by private airline service companies. Massport requires fuelers and airlines to prevent and minimize fuel spills through good management practices and operating procedures planning and having spill response equipment on-hand in the event of a spill. Massport routinely tracks spills and contacts tenants with multiple or unusually large spills to assess their spill prevention and control procedures. Massport requires that all spills, regardless of size, must be reported to the Massport Fire Department.

Why does water quality test data at Logan's stormwater outfalls vary from month to month? (expand)

Due to the factors that affect sample collection and laboratory analysis, it is normal for samples collected at slightly different times and locations (i.e. depth) to produce different laboratory results. The most important consideration to protect water quality is that samples are collected regularly and results are routinely below EPA's permit limits. Samples are collected 3 times each month at Logan and are routinely well below EPA's permit limit. Visual observations during sample collection are also important to ensure good water quality in the discharge.

There are many small outfalls around the perimeter of the airfield. Why doesn't Massport sample these? (expand)

These outfalls do not drain areas where active operations like fueling and maintenance occur. Consequently, the likelihood of pollutants being discharged from these outfalls is remote.

Does Massport provide any pollution control at Logan's outfalls? (expand)

The drainage from the two main operational areas of the airport (North and West drainage areas) have pollution control equipment designed to remove floating debris and oil prior to discharge to Boston Harbor. This equipment was upgraded in 2000 to improve its operating efficiency.

What happens to the water used for fire fighting practice at Logan's Fire Training Facility? (expand)

The water from fire training is collected and treated with a carbon filter to remove any contaminants. Usually the treated water is reused on-site during subsequent fire training exercises.

What is the compliance rate for Logan's stormwater outfalls? (expand)

Logan routinely complies with permit requirements over 95% of the time.
