Sean M. O’Brien is a fourth-generation Teamster and the General President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

He joined Teamsters Local 25 in Charlestown, MA at the age of 18, hauling heavy equipment in the Greater Boston area before becoming a business agent in 2001 and, in 2006, was elected the youngest president/principal officer in Local 25’s history. Under his leadership, Local 25’s membership increased by more than 30%.

In 2011, he was elected Eastern Region Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and in 2021 was elected General President of the 1.3-million-member union, pledging a new militant leadership focused on workers.

First appointed to his position on Massport Board of Directors in 2011, O’Brien also serves as co-chairman and trustee of the New England Teamsters Pension Fund.

In addition to fighting for workers, O’Brien has helped raise millions of dollars for charitable causes, including Local 25’s signature event “Light Up the Night,” an annual gala to raise money for children with autism.
