Massport Brings a Little Joy – and Therapy Dogs – to Boston Logan Travelers

Passengers will be feeling all the paws-itive vibes

Passengers at Boston Logan International Airport can look forward to meeting some furry friends, thanks to a new program called “BOS PAWS”. In partnership with the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is introducing trained therapy dogs to the airport to help reduce stress and enhance the overall travel experience.

Passengers are encouraged to take a pause in their trip through the airport to pet and engage with the BOS PAWS crew, including a Giant Schnauzer named Remington, a West Highland Terrier (“westie”) named Buster, and a French Bulldog named Waffles.

“Boston Logan Airport is often the first and last impression that millions of travelers have of Massachusetts, and now, thanks to this new program, it’s also one of the most welcoming,” said Governor Maura Healey. “We want everyone who travels through Logan to know that we prioritize mental health here in Massachusetts. I want to thank Rich Davey and the Massport team, the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, and the handlers who have made this program possible.”

The BOS PAWS program will provide therapy dogs throughout the terminals to create a de-stressing moment for passengers. Both the handlers and the dogs have more than a year of experience participating in similar programs.

“At Boston Logan, we are very focused on creating a seamless and stress-free experience for travelers from the minute they walk into our terminals,” said Massport CEO Rich Davey. “BOS PAWS will hopefully put smiles on the faces of many travelers and provide comfort to those who may feel anxious or stressed during their journey. Spend a few minutes with Waffles or Buster before your flight, you’ll love it.”

According to the NIH, interacting with animals has been shown to decrease levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone) and lower blood pressure. Other studies have found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood.

Travel can be inherently stressful, which is why Massport is exploring new ways to improve the experience at Boston Logan. From faster Wi-Fi and renovated bathrooms to participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, Massport is going above and beyond to make Boston Logan a welcoming, friendly place for all.
