The United Service Organizations (USO) of New England have a new appreciation for the old adage Room for Improvement since WHDH Channel 7 chose the USO Welcome Center at Boston Logan International Airport for a complete make-over as part of the top-rated news show feature "Room for Improvement".

For 24 years, the USO at Boston Logan has been boosting the morale and providing a place of comfort for service members and their families. Located in Terminal C, the Welcome Center was a hodgepodge of furniture and used equipment. With the generosity of the airport community, the USO is now enjoying a brand new facility, rebuilt from the ground up, with new lighting, terrazzo floors, stylish furniture, and amenities such as a wide screen television, computer work stations with wi-fi access, library, a baggage hold area, office space and a new kitchen facility.

"The USO's mission is to meet the needs of the military and their families especially during the continuing war against terrorism," said USO Executive Director Richard Pelosi. "In 2007 we expect to see nearly 7000 members of the armed forces travel through Logan so it is with heartfelt gratitude that I thank all the volunteers who participated in this effort for the benefit of our troops."

"Massport, and the airport community have been proud to help the USO in their mission to provide a home away from home for America's armed forces personnel," said Massport's Director of Aviation Edward C. Freni. "It was inspiring to watch these dedicated volunteers work to rebuild Logan's USO Welcome Center that offers our troops so much assistance as they travel between assignments or home to their loved ones."

In 2007 Massport honored the USO of New England with a plaque for their 24 years of service to the men and women of the US military traveling through Boston Logan International Airport. The plaque depicts the airport's namesake, General Edward Lawrence Logan and recognizes Massachusetts citizens who have served in the armed forces during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Boston Logan serves as the gateway to the six-state New England region with a population of over 14 million and offers nonstop service to 79 domestic and 37 international destinations. Boston Logan also has more low fare flights than any airport in New England and in 2006 handled nearly 28 million passengers.
