The Massachusetts Port Authority announced today that pre-construction work for the Tobin Bridge $6.5 million redecking project will begin Wednesday, September 5, when new signage will be put in place.
On Monday, September 10 through Wednesday 13, jersey barriers will be installed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for traffic convenience and commuter safety. Extra State Police details will be assigned to the bridge to provide additional safety and traffic control.
With the barriers in place, the left lane on the lower deck of the Tobin Bridge will be closed permanently for approximately 18 months for redecking.
The work consists of rehabilitating approximately 74,000 square feet of the lower level bridge deck and walkways. Old concrete and worn surfaces will be removed and replaced, including steel grid and expansion joints. New deck concrete, wearing surface and drainage pipes will be installed.
M. DeMateo Construction Company, contractor for the redecking project, will operate from a staging site located on Massport property under the Tobin Bridge, near Autoport in Charlestown.
A community information meeting is being scheduled through the Charlestown Neighborhood Council for early September.
