The South Boston Maritime Park design was achieved with great input from the South Boston community including members of the South Boston Design Advisory Committee, Residents Group, Castle Island Association, local residents and business owners; representatives from open space, youth, art, universal access and harbor advocacy groups. Award-winning landscape architects, The Halverson Design Partnership with architects Machado-Silvetti Inc. created and developed the park that connects the South Boston community to the working waterfront.
Uniquely themed, the South Boston Maritime Park highlights Boston's history as one of the oldest seaports in the Western Hemisphere and once the busiest trading post in North America. Maritime related elements and interpretive art adorn the park reminding visitors of Boston's proud maritime past as well as modern day activities within the Port of Boston.
Perhaps, the most prominent aspect of the park is its universal appeal. With sprawling green lawns offering views of Boston Harbor, it is an inviting place to catch a glimpse of the city's working waterfront including the historic Fish Pier and other waterfront activities. Other amenities include canopied trees, pergolas, park benches and an outdoor cafi. It is accessible and convenient for people of all ages and physical capacities.
All residents are invited to attend the South Boston Maritime Park opening. The celebration will feature entertainment, children's activities, food/refreshments and more. Please RSVP by June 21 to Massport at 617-568-3714.
