Massport today announced that effective Friday, October 5, more than 100 National Guardsmen will be deployed at Massport facilities. The National Guard will monitor security checkpoints at Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field and Worcester Regional Airport.
We are grateful to Governor Swift for deploying the National Guard so quickly and look forward to their presence at the airports, said Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham.
The Guardsmen will undergo an intensive two-day training program run by the FAA with Massport staff assisting with airport familiarization. The training is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
The National Guard will augment and replace some of the state and local police and Federal Marshals currently stationed at airport checkpoints. The National Guard deployment is expected to continue for four to six months.
