The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced today that a special exhibit of the work of six design finalists for the Boston Logan International Airport 9/11 Memorial will be on public display in Terminal E from now until May 8, 2008.
The six teams that were shortlisted in the design competition are:
- Cavanaugh Stewart Design Associates of Allston, Mass.
- Geller DeVellis, now known as Stantec, of Boston;
- The team of Michael Joyce and Michael Kim; Joyce is now with Goody Clancy Associates of Boston and Kim is with Michael Kim Associates of Brookline, Mass.
- Legge Lewis Legge, based in New York, and Austin, Tex,
Moskow Linn Architects, Inc. of Boston - Pressley Associates, Inc. of Cambridge, Mass.
Their work is on display and available for viewing by the public in the northern end of the Arrivals Hall of Terminal E, near the exit from US Customs and Agriculture on the lower level.
Two of the four flights commandeered by terrorists on September 11, 2001 departed Boston Logan. Many of the passengers – and crew – were local residents who left behind families, friends, neighbors and colleagues. The Airport 9/11 Memorial is intended as a place of reflection and remembrance for those affected by the horrendous events of that day. The Airport 9/11 Memorial will honor the passengers and crew of American Airlines Fight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, and commemorate the contributions and dedication to duty of the Logan Airport community during that difficult period.
“Selecting a design that kept faith with the enormity of the event and all who experienced it was particularly difficult given the extraordinary quality of work submitted, as this exhibit attests,’’ said Edward C. Freni, Massport’s Aviation Director. “Massport is particularly grateful to the members of Boston’s design community who generously gave of their time to advise us on this project. Massport is also indebted to the 9/11 Memorial Design Advisory Committee, representing many parts of the Logan Community, who selected the final design.’’
The selected design is now under construction on a two acre site at Logan International Airport. It is scheduled for completion in September 2008.
