BOSTON – The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has presented Diversity Scholarships to three recent high school graduates as part of an annual award ceremony at Boston Logan International Airport.

The scholarship program, which started in 2007, is open to all graduating high school seniors in Massachusetts. Applicants must have an interest in pursuing a degree that could be used in a career in transportation. Areas of study include: Aviation, Business Administration, Accounting, Architecture, Finance, Human Resources or STEM -- Science, Technology Engineering Math.

This year’s $1,500 prizes were awarded to Lynn residents Ysabel Espinal and Sovathya Sar and Miles Maurice Hyman of Springfield, Mass.

“Massport is honored to support some of the Commonwealth’s best and brightest young men and women as they begin their college careers,’’ said Thomas P. Glynn, Massport CEO. “Diversity is important in every profession and we are proud to help foster it in the transportation industry.’’

Espinal is a resident of Lynn and will pursue an engineering degree at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Espinal was a member of the National Honor Society while studying at Lynn Classical High School as well as a La Vida Scholar, a three-year college preparation program.

Sar, a resident of Lynn, will attend Wentworth Institute of Technology to study Civil Engineering. Sar is a graduate of Lynn Classical High School where he was a member of the varsity track team and College Bowl team, as well as a MCAS tutor for middle school students.

Hyman is a resident of Springfield and will attend Harvard University where he will study arts and sciences. Hyman was president of the National Honor Society at Hampden Charter School of Science and Student Body President.

Boston Logan, 15 minutes from the intersection of Route 128 and I-90 and five minutes from downtown Boston, serves as the gateway to the New England region and offers nonstop service to 72 domestic and 32 international destinations and in 2012 handled 29 million passengers. Boston Logan is the Air Line Pilot Association’s Airport of the Year for 2008 because of its commitment to safety. Over the past decade, the airport spent $4.5 billion on a modernization program that includes new terminals, public transportation access, parking facilities, roadways and airport concessions, and has been transformed into a world-class 21st Century facility. The airport generates $7 billion in total economic impact each year.
