BOSTON – Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced the launch of a new portal on the agency’s public website (www.Massport.com) to share information on its Resiliency Program. Massport’s public website now includes a series of webpages which focus on the agency’s preparedness efforts around both manmade threats and natural events; such as increased storm and flood intensity as well as sea level rise.

With its planning and public information efforts, Massport is joining the national and international discourse and taking a leading regional role in the important and cutting-edge field of building resiliency for all critical infrastructure and human resources.

Since 1999, Massport has been a leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to help mitigate climate change, and the agency is preparing for the inevitable future changes in climate including an increase in the number and strength of storms, more annual precipitation, a change in the number of snow days per month, and a rise in annual temperature with an increase in the number of days with a temperature over 100 ºF (37.7ºC). Preparing Massport for these changes will help protect Logan International Airport and the region’s maritime investments by minimizing infrastructure failure, reducing operations and maintenance costs, and ultimately improving the safety and security of these assets that New England residents rely on.

“Safety and security are our top priorities at Massport, and we take the issues of natural and manmade threats very seriously,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “While our planning and implementation efforts are always ongoing, we hope that the leadership role we are currently taking with our resiliency efforts will serve as a model for other agencies in the region and across the U.S.”

The new site gives an overview of Massport’s Resiliency Program along with messages from the agency’s Program Manager of Resiliency and other key stakeholders. These pages include information on resiliency at multiple scales: from hardening Massport’s assets, facing environmental threats in New England, to dealing with varied resiliency concerns across the globe. The pages are visually dynamic and interactive, offering over 150 links to resources including news articles, external reports, images, and related organizations which will be continually updated to remain a relevant and comprehensive database. The goal is for Massport’s site to serve as a useful tool for others preparing their assets and communities for future threats.

Massport’s new webpages are an indication of the agency’s commitment to being a knowledge-sharing exemplar of a forward-thinking, resilient port authority.
