Mark your calendars for August 24, 2003, when the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) will offer an exciting evening of classical music with the acclaimed Boston Landmarks Orchestra. The entertainment starts at 6:00 p.m. and will conclude at approximately 8:00 p.m.
With Charles Ansbacher conducting the "Three Landmark Sopranos," concert-goers will be treated to the sounds of some of Boston's finest musicians, including three internationally acclaimed sopranos when they perform some of the most beloved operatic music ever written. The three main attractions are: Leah Hunt, soprano, Jonita Lattimore, soprano (making her Boston debut this season), and Deborah Fields, mezzo-soprano.
"We invite everyone to enjoy wonderful music while the sun sets behind the magnificent Boston skyline," said Massport CEO Craig P. Coy. "Massport is proud to play a part in presenting one of our city's best cultural offerings to local neighborhood residents."
Set in picturesque Piers Park, breathtaking views of Boston and the harbor will serve as a backdrop to a repertoire, which includes selections by Mozart, Verdi, Puccini, Gershwin, and Rodgers & Hammerstein, as well as two world premieres by composer Patricia Van Ness. One of Van Ness's pieces is inspired by historic Franklin Park and the other is a new ensemble work especially written for these three sopranos, with lyrics in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole.
East Boston's Piers Park is a 6.5- acre parcel located on East Boston's historic waterfront and overlooking the Boston skyline. Massport built the award-winning park in 1986 to create more green space in East Boston. The park features strolling walkways, a 600-foot pier lined with pavilions and benches, an amphitheatre and a childrens' playground.
The Boston Landmarks Orchestra is a non-profit organization founded in January 2001 to perform accessible summer concerts celebrating historical, geographical and architectural settings.
The Piers Park concert will mark the final concert of the Landmarks 2003 summer concert series. Other concert venues this summer included the Boston Common, Franklin Park and the Tabernacle on Martha's Vineyard.
Piers Park is accessible by public transportation. Take the blue line to Maverick station and following the signs to Piers Park. Limited parking at the adjacent Pier One parking lot will be available for group buses, elderly and handicapped by calling Massport's Office of Government and Community Affairs at 617-568-3711
