BOSTON – Increased passenger travel is expected at Boston Logan International Airport during February as schools in New England close for vacation resulting in demand for airport parking that is expected to exceed the number of spaces available.

Last year, there were about 30 weeks in which demand for spaces exceeded the 16,200 lined spaces on airport, resulting in an inconvenient valet operation in which drivers are directed to park so they block other vehicles and relinquish their keys. Massport uses extra parking staff to direct drivers to these temporary spaces and then re-park the cars in lined spaces when they become available.

“Parking at the airport has become a chronic problem with demand exceeding capacity nearly 50 days out of the year,’’ said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn. “No one wants to miss a flight because they could not find a place to park. Massport will work hard to accommodate passengers who need parking, but passengers may be sent off airport if there is no more room.’’

To help reduce vehicle trips to the airport, Massport provides Logan Express bus service from suburban locations in Braintree, Framingham, Woburn and Peabody and encourages the use of public transportation. In 2012, Massport began offering free Silver Line service from the airport to the Seaport District and South Station.  Forty percent of Logan’s passengers choose a bus, public transit, taxi or shared van to reach the airport ranking Logan first among U.S. airports for high occupancy vehicle use.

During the high demand February school vacation period, Massport is offering a special Logan Express discount that could add up to more than $100 in savings by not parking at the airport.  For a family of four traveling for a seven day February vacation, roundtrip Logan Express service including parking will cost $44, a dramatic savings over Logan’s Central Garage, which would cost $189, or Economy Parking, which would cost $108. Children 17 years old and under ride for free, when accompanied by an adult on Logan Express and adult passengers will pay half off their round-trip bus fare.

For February vacation Massport is offering a special Logan Express parking rate of $22 between February 11 and February 25, 2014 for 4-14 day parking. Travelers must enter a Logan Express parking lot between 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, February 11 through 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, February 25 to be eligible for the special parking rate. Logan Express provides bus service every half hour between Logan Airport and Woburn, Braintree and Framingham, and hourly service between Logan and Peabody. Buses will be added to meet the anticipated increase in demand and maintain the posted schedule. For frequent travelers, Massport is also offering a 10 ride book of tickets for $75, a 30% savings over the standard rate.

For travelers choosing public transportation, the MBTA Silver Line provides service between South Station and Logan’s terminals every 10 minutes. Outbound service from Logan Airport to the South Boston Seaport District and South Station is free. The MBTA Blue Line provides subway service between Boston and Airport Station. Massport provides free shuttle service to and from all terminals Water transportation is also available by water taxi companies providing on-call service to points throughout Downtown Boston from the Logan dock.

Travelers are advised to check with their airline for up-to-date flight information and to allow themselves additional time to get to the airport. For traveler convenience, Massport encourages travelers to visit its mobile optimized website, FlyLogan.com to check flight status, parking conditions and public transportation options from their smartphone or tablet device.

Massport reminds drivers that the Callahan Tunnel remains closed as the Massachusetts Department of Transportation continues a rehabilitation of the tunnel. Drivers are encouraged to visit MassDot.com for detour and travel information.
