BOSTON – Next stop Boston’s Back Bay! announced Massport today with the start of new shuttle bus service from Logan International Airport to the Hynes Convention Center and Copley MBTA Station on Boylston Street.

Logan’s new Back Bay Shuttle will launch this spring as a two year pilot with convenient service every 20 minutes between the two Back Bay locations and the airport. The shuttle bus will stop at each airport terminal on the departure level and pick-up passengers on the arrivals level. Massport is offering the shuttle bus service as part of its effort to promote high occupancy vehicle use as well as to mitigate passenger inconvenience from the two year closure of the Government Center MBTA Station. Forty percent of Logan’s passengers choose a bus, public transit, taxi or shared van to reach the airport ranking Logan first among U.S. airports for high occupancy vehicle use.

“Logan Express service between the suburbs and Logan Airport is successful and the time is right with the closure of the Government Center T station for us to test that concept in the Back Bay where demand is high for direct airport service to accommodate the growing number of visitors and conventioneers,” said Massport CEO Thomas P. Glynn.

Massport expects to carry up to 1,400 passengers each day using 40’ foot clean fuel buses. Service will be seven days a week starting at 5:00 am until 9:00 pm from Back Bay and 6:00 am until 10:00 pm from Logan Airport. The fare will be $5.00 payable with a credit or debit card or free for riders with a valid MBTA pass.

Other public transportation options from Logan Airport include the popular free Silver Line service to the South Boston Innovation District and South Station with connections to the MBTA’s Red Line rapid transit system. The Silver Line, which started service in 2006, is a keystone in Massport’s efforts to promote HOV ridership to and from the airport to reduce congestion at the terminal curbs and on airport roadways, as well as reduce vehicle emissions. Massport purchased eight clean-fuel Silver Line buses for the MBTA in 2005.

Boston Logan, 15 minutes from the intersection of Route 128 and I-90 and five minutes from downtown Boston, and serves as the gateway to the New England region and offers nonstop service to 76 domestic and 36 international destinations and in 2013 handled more than 30 million passengers. Boston Logan is served by two public transit lines and is the Air Line Pilot Association’s Airport of the Year for 2008 because of its commitment to safety. Over the past decade, the airport spent $4.5 billion on a modernization program that includes new terminals, public transportation access, parking facilities, roadways and airport concessions, and has been transformed into a world-class 21^st Century facility. The airport generates $7 billion in total economic impact each year.
