Kathryn West Appointed to the Massport Board
Newest Member Brings Wealth of Experience in Real Estate

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Port Authority welcomed Board Member Kathryn West to the state authority that owns and operates Boston Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field in Bedford, Worcester Regional Airport, the public container and cruise terminals in the Port of Boston and has real estate holdings around the harbor. Massport’s facilities generate more than $8 billion in annual economic income and support about 20,000 direct jobs.

West was sworn in by Gov. Patrick on June 15 and participated in her first board meeting today. She is Vice President of Real Estate and Facilities at Partners HealthCare, a position she held since 1998. As such she is responsible for the strategic management of a real estate portfolio of over 16 million square feet of owned and leased property at two academic medical centers, community hospitals, specialty hospitals, and community health centers. She also was Associate Dean of Harvard Medical School, and worked as director of real estate development at the MBTA.

“I am pleased to have someone with Kathy’s experience in the private and public sectors join the Massport Board,’’ said Jeffrey B. Mullan, Chairman of the Massport board and Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Massachusetts Department of Transportation. “Her expertise in real estate management and in transportation more broadly will bring an important voice and perspective to the Board.”

“Kathy understands the unique responsibilities, requirements and challenges of public agencies in the critical real estate development field,’’ said David S. Mackey, Interim CEO of Massport. “Kathy’s experience with the planning and permitting of large-scale development projects, as well as sustainable and energy saving initiatives, are particularly important for Massport now that we are committed to incorporating sustainable design and alternative energy into virtually every major construction project we undertake.’’

West, like all board members, serves without pay. Her term runs through June 2016. West has a bachelor’s degree in Government from Smith College and received an MBA with high honors from Boston University.  She is on the Board of Directors Management Committee of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP), is an active member of New England Women in Real Estate, is Assistant Chair of the Healthcare and Life Sciences Council of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and serves on the Board of Directors of the Boston Center for the Arts as well as on the Board of Trustees of Lasell College in Newton, MA.

Boston Logan, 15 minutes from the intersection of Route 128 and I-90 and five minutes from downtown Boston, serves as the gateway to the New England region and offers nonstop service to 70 domestic and 31 international destinations and in 2009 handled 25.5 million passengers. Boston Logan is the Air Line Pilot Association’s Airport of the Year for 2008 because of its commitment to safety. Over the past decade, the airport spent $4.5 billion on a modernization program that includes new terminals, parking facilities, roadways and airport concessions, and has been transformed into a world-class 21st Century facility.  The airport generates $7 billion in total economic impact each year.
