At the request of State Representative Robert DeLeo, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has donated a shipping container from Conley Terminal to the Winthrop High School. The 40-foot long container will be used to store the Winthrop Vikings' athletic equipment enabling the sports gear to be stored near the school's playing and practice fields.
I am proud that Massport can team up with the Winthrop Vikings and continue to partner with the community, said Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham. We are committed to working with Representative DeLeo and Senator Travaglini to come up with creative solutions that help improve the quality of life for nearby residents.
"I'm pleased the Authority and I could come together on this issue to provide Winthrop with a much needed piece of equipment--and it is my sincere hope we will be able to work together in similar instances in the future," said Representative Robert DeLeo.
Massport refurbished the container originally belonging to Mediterranean Shipping Company and delivered it to Winthrop High School's practice field. In 1999, Massport contributed $25,000 to install lighting on the high school's Miller Field, permitting night games.
