An ongoing commitment.

Sustained and thoughtful neighborhood collaboration, advancing technologies and our own commitment to the well-being of the communities around us have resulted in important progress on noise. Over the course of the past 15 years, noise levels have dropped by a third; today’s A320 and B737-8 are the cleanest and quietest aircraft in use, and 97% of the jet fleet at Boston Logan meets FAA noise standards.

It’s a complicated issue. Improved engine technology has reduced “significant” noise from planes by 95% since 1980. “Significant” noise is measured at 65 dB DNL (decibels day-night average sound level) by the FAA. Massport measures noise at seven locations in East Boston, five in Winthrop and in 18 other community locations in and around Boston.

At Massport, we don’t design jet engines, nor can we control the weather, which determines flight patterns. We do soundproof homes and school buildings, over 11,000 so far in the first large-scale residential soundproofing program in the country.
