The History of Concorde at Logan International Airport

  • Concorde has visited Logan for various special events, such as the opening of Logan's international terminal (Terminal E) in 1974; the Ryder Cup in 1999; and the farewell visit on October 8, 2003 to Logan's newly modernized international terminal.
  • The trip between London and Boston on Concorde takes approximately three hours and twenty minutes, nearly two hours shorter than a flight on a traditional jet aircraft. Concorde travels at an altitude of 60,000 feet, cruising at 1,350 miles per hours -- twice the speed of sound
  • On June 13, 1974, Concorde reached Boston from Paris in three hours and nine minutes, setting a record for the ocean crossing.
  • On June 17, 1974 Concorde departed Boston to participate in a spectacular race against a Boeing 747 to demonstrate the speed of supersonic travel. Concorde departed Boston for Paris at the same time the 747 departed Paris for Boston. Concorde arrived in Paris, waited 68 minutes for a missing passenger, departed for Boston and still arrived at Logan 11 minutes before the 747.
  • The excitement about the Concorde's visit in 1974 was overwhelming. Tens of thousands of people came to Logan to view the aircraft causing an enormous traffic jam at Logan.
  • In September 1999, Concorde carried Prince Andrew and members of the European Ryder Cup team to participate in the golf tournament at the Country Club in Brookline.
  • Logan was selected to be one of only three North American cities participating in the farewell tour because of it's strong relationship and long history with British Airways and to acknowledge the opening of the International Gateway. British Airways has been servicing Logan since 1951 (originally named British Overseas Airways Corporation).
  • The International Gateway, Logan's newly expanded and modernized international terminal, features the latest in customer service amenities and security technology. The expanded terminal is twice as large as the original Terminal E, has three times as many check-in positions and a new two-level roadway separating arriving and departing traffic and dramatically reducing roadway congestion.
  • On Thursday, October 9, 2003, four local school groups will have the opportunity to tour Concorde and learn about supersonic travel from the British Airways crew. The schools invited by Massport to participate include: the Umana Barnes Middle School in East Boston, The Winthrop Middle School in Winthrop, South Boston Harbor Academy in South Boston, and the Beachmont School in Revere.
