New Logan Express For North Shore Residents; HOV Service Will Cut 200,000 Annual Car Trips to and from Airport

9/1/2001

Beginning Friday, September 7, 2001, getting to Logan International Airport from the North Shore will get a lot easier. The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) will open its fourth Logan Express park-n-ride facility in Peabody with the new service expected to eliminate 200,000 car trips a year to and from Logan International Airport, reducing traffic and improving convenience for North Shore residents. Massport currently operates Logan Express services in Braintree, Framingham and Woburn.

The new Logan Express facility on the North Shore will help us provide first rate customer service while reducing the number of cars that pass through local streets, said Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham. We are setting the standard for environmentally-friendly access to air travel.

The Peabody Logan Express facility is located on Route 1 South at 164 Newbury Street at the site of the former Volcano Park indoor golf business. The site offers easy access to and from Route 1 and Interstate 95.

The September opening of Peabody Logan Express is an early opening with more than 200 parking spaces and a temporary ticket office and waiting area. Massport is opening the facility early to better accommodate North Shore residents during the busy fall travel season. The permanent ticketing office and waiting area will open officially later this fall. By next summer, the site will accommodate 700 parking spaces.

I feel that the addition of the new Logan Express site in Peabody will make life easier for residents on the North Shore, said Senator Fredrick E. Berry (D-Peabody). The new park-and-ride facility will provide a convenient, accessible, and reliable way to get to and from Logan Airport.

Logan Express is a park and ride non-stop bus (to/from Logan Airport) with secured 24-hour parking. Monday to Friday the Logan Express will leave Peabody every half-hour from 4:30am to 11:00pm. On Saturday "early bird" trips begin at 4:30am, 5:30am, then 6:00am to 10:00pm every hour, on the hour. Sunday at 4:30am, 5:30am then 6:00am to 12 noon every hour on the hour, from 12 noon to 11:00pm every half-hour. Buses will depart Logan for Peabody every 30 minutes at quarter past and quarter of the hour. Tickets cost $8.00 for a one-way trip, $14.00 round-trip. Parking is $7.00 per day, $42.00 per week. The rate for senior citizens is $7.00 one way, round trip is $12.00. Children under the age of 12, accompanied by an adult, travel free of charge.

The first Logan Express opened in Braintree in 1986 as part of a mitigation agreement Massport made to increase HOV ridership. An additional Logan Express service opened in Framingham later that year and the Woburn Logan Express began in 1993. Last year, Logan Express carried an all-time high of 1.1 million passengers, an 8% increase over 1999.
