Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV) Logan has served as a testing ground for a number of cutting edge alternative fuel programs and technologies. Massport began converting its Logan-based shuttle buses in 1995 and now all of Massport's fleet of 33 airport shuttle buses operate using CNG. Logan is also home to the region's largest CNG filling station. Massport has worked closely with environmental agencies and airport tenants to encourage airport companies to convert their Logan fleets to alternative fuels. In 2001, Massport was hailed as an "AFV Hero" at the Opening Plenary Session of the Annual Clean Cities Symposium in Philadelphia. In July 2003, Massports CNG Shuttle Bus Program was named the Concept Most Likely to Reduce Emissions at the First Annual ALT Wheels Festival, New England's first alternative transportation festival. The CNG buses are an integral part of Massport's aggressive alternative fuel program and are used to transport passengers between Logans terminals, the MBTA station and Water Shuttle Dock. Over 100 vehicles of Massport's Logan-based fleet operates on CNG or electricity. In addition, Massport has developed an annual vehicle acquisition program and procures additional CNG and electric vehicles as opportunities arise.
In late 2001, Massport replaced its last diesel bus with a new Wheelchair Lift Cut-away bus. This bus, built on the new Ford E-450 CNG chassis, displaces over 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel annually. Also that year, Massport took delivery of a one-of-a-kind CNG/Electric Hybrid Citivan from Solectria Corporation of Woburn, MA. This ultra-low emissions vehicle uses a Capstone Turbine engine to power an array of electric batteries. To support this growing fleet of alternative fueled vehicles, Massport has developed and maintains an extensive infrastructure for electric vehicles with numerous charging spaces and inductive chargers located in key locations at Logan Airport. In anticipation of the emissions reductions that are made possible through the expansion of Massports AFV program at Logan Airport, Massport also has developed a goal for the continued conversion of conventionally-powered vehicles to AFV. A key element of this program is the phased conversion of the entire Ground Service Equipment fleet at Logan Airport to Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs), an effort which involves not only Massport initiatives, but also participation of its tenants (i.e., fixed-based operators and airlines that operate at Logan Airport). Private fleet operators using AFV at Logan In addition to operating an extensive fleet of CNG-fueled shuttle buses, Massport has also encouraged its tenant and other off airport transit service providers to adopt the use of alternative fuel vehicles (AFV). Massport offers a 25% discount on Logan ground access fees for qualified AFVs. Currently, the following private fleet operators or companies providing access to Logan are using AFV for some or all of there Logan fleets:
