South Boston

South Boston is home to Conley Container Terminal, the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal, Fargo Street and Massport Maritime Terminals, Ted Williams Tunnel access to Logan Airport, air cargo facilities and airport related parking lots, the World Trade Center and a number of commercial developments on Massport-owned property in the South Boston Waterfront district.

South Boston is a well-known Irish-American working class neighborhood that also is home to vibrant Polish and Lithuanian communities. Once known as “Dorchester Neck,” the area was the site of the battle of Dorchester Heights in which British cannon captured from Fort Ticonderoga by American forces under the command of George Washington forced British occupiers from Boston on March 17, 1776, an event celebrated each year as Evacuation Day by Boston residents.
