Waterfront Planning Massports Planning and Development Unit undertakes a range of land use, transportation, and real estate development planning focusing on the Authoritys waterfront property in Charlestown, East Boston, and South Boston. This work includes coordination with agencies such as the Massachusetts Highway Department on the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority on the South Boston Piers Transitway, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, and numerous other City, State, and Federal agencies; community and other advocacy groups; and private property owners. Key objectives of Massports planning in these areas include developing successful mixed-use projects in a manner that is compatible with the working port and the neighboring communities; ensuring that the necessary infrastructure is built to support present and potential future land uses; and creating attractive, functional, and safe urban streets and open spaces integrated with those on adjacent properties. Currently, Massports Planning and Development Unit has underway two strategic planning efforts for the Authoritys waterfront properties in South Boston and East Boston. In addition, Massport staff play an active role in harborwide planning efforts such as the developing network of passenger water transportation services and facilities and the on-going planning for the new Boston Harbor Islands National Park.
