Resiliency and Climate Change


Changing climate is real and the consequent disruptions (such as increased storms and fluctuations of extreme temperatures) will be more frequent in the future.  This requires us to change the way we plan, design, and manage both our built and non-built environment – with the end goal of creating a resilient and sustainable future for ecosystems, human communities, and economic viability. 

Since 1999, Massport has been a leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to help mitigate climate change.  And Logan International Airport is leading the way to a more sustainable future with a recent grant from the Federal Aviation Agency.  Massport has been selected to receive a FAA grant to prepare a Sustainability Management Plan (SMP) for Logan Airport as part of a nationally recognized pilot program. Massport was selected because of our exemplary track record in implementing sustainability initiatives (as shown in the ESPR and Annual Updates), our energy management, HOV program and for being good stewards of the environment. While this key initiative is being facilitated by the Capital Programs department, it is a Logan-wide effort. The SMP will serve as a role model for our other facilities as well as airports across the country.  

Importantly, and in parallel with these important initiatives, we are now preparing Massport for the inevitable future changes in climate. In Massachusetts, there will be an increase in the number and strength of storms, more annual precipitation, a change in the number of snow days per month, and a rise in annual temperature with an increase in the number of days with a temperature over 100 ºF (37.7ºC).  Preparing Massport for these expected changes will help protect our airport and maritime investments by minimizing infrastructure failure, reducing operations and maintenance costs, and ultimately improving the safety of our users.

Reducing Greenhouse Gases

The Logan Campus includes two LEED-Certified buildings: one was the first LEED-Certified Airline Terminal in the world. Massport continued its commitment to sustainable building practices by repaving a runway with “warm-mix” asphalt, which saved 200,000 gallons of diesel fuel, 2,000 tons of carbon dioxide, and 26.4 billion BTUs. In 2001, Massport began a 15-year initiative to keep nitrogen oxide emissions at Logan at or below levels recorded in 1999. The Authority aims to reduce single-occupancy vehicular travel by coordinating Silver Line service to airport terminals, giving CleanAir Cabs head-of-line privileges, and offering parking incentives to travelers driving clean fuel vehicles. Massport operates a fleet of Compressed Natural Gas shuttle buses, which reached their 12-millionth clean air mile in 2008.
