Massport Announces New Toll Enforcement Procedures For Passenger Vehicles On The Tobin Bridge

February 20, 2009

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced that a new failure-to-pay toll policy will start March 1, 2009. The new policy ends a 2-1/2 year old policy of reducing the $50 fine to $6 for first time offenders who paid the toll within 21 days.

When a motorist is unable to pay the toll, a violation notice is issued and a second notice with the fine is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle.

The new policy is expected to reduce back office costs of determining which of the approximately 1,000 violations each month were eligible for the first-time offense reduction.

All other late fees will not change. After 21 days, a $5 late fee is assessed. After 30 days an additional $15 is charged, and if the violation still remains unpaid after 60 days, an additional $20 fine is levied. Failure to pay will be reported to the Registry of Motor Vehicles and will result in non-renewal of vehicle registration or driver’s license. Detailed information for payment or appeal is included on the “Violation Notice.”
