Tobin Bridge Traffic Advisory
Fourth Street ramp closed for several weeks as part of Beacon Street off-ramp rehab

October 10, 2007

Because of on-going construction and rehabilitation work on the Tobin Bridge, the 4th Street Ramp will be closed until the completion of the Beacon Street off-ramp rehabilitation project. Motorists destined for downtown Chelsea should take the Webster Avenue off-ramp and drivers wishing to reach Boston Logan International Airport should follow Route 16 from Webster Avenue

The Beacon Street off-ramp project is part of Massport’s ongoing effort to maintain one of the region’s most vital transportation assets. The $265,000 project – part of the $5 million Massport will spend on bridge maintenance this year --  includes milling and repaving of the lower portion of the Beacon Street off-ramp as well as the removal and replacement of guard rail, catch basins and traffic safety lights. Variable message signs with updated lane closure and merge information will be strategically placed for the public’s convenience. Commuters are advised to check traffic advisories and local and major media outlets for lane closure changes and project status reports. The 4th Street ramp was closed to ensure the safe flow of traffic.

The Beacon Street project began on Wednesday October 3, and is expected to be ongoing from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, for approximately eight weeks. Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Massport’s Office of Government and Community Affairs at 617-568-3711.

The Tobin Memorial Bridge, at 2 ¼ miles long is the largest bridge in New England. With three travel lanes northbound on its lower level and three lanes southbound on the upper level, it is the critical link that connects North Shore residents and businesses to the larger economy. Each day 75,000 vehicles travel over the 57-year-old bridge. Tolls collected on the Tobin Bridge support the bridge operation, its annual maintenance program, debt service and future obligations.
