Holiday for South Boston Waterfront Parking Meters
No charge for parking at Massport spaces with meters on Sundays and legal
holidays as determined by the City of Boston
July 19, 2007
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) Board of Directors took action
this morning to align the Authority’s parking meter policies in South Boston
with the City of Boston effective September 1, 2007. Boston allows free
on-street meter parking on Sundays and holidays. Prior to the change in policy,
motorists parking at Massport meters were required to make payment seven days
per week with no exceptions for holidays.
“The inconsistencies of meter policies are confusing to the general public,”
said Massport CEO and Executive Director Thomas J. Kinton Jr. “There’s been a
tremendous investment in the South Boston waterfront and it’s our responsibility
to do our part to promote a welcoming atmosphere that invites visitors, business
and our South Boston neighbors to enjoy this revitalized district.”
Massport offers approximately 115 metered parking spaces along Seaport
Boulevard/Northern Avenue, Seaport Lane, D Street and Congress Street. The new
policy states that meters shall be effective from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and
that there shall be no charge for parking at Massport spaces with meters on
Sundays; legal holidays as determined by the City of Boston; and days on which
the Mayor of the City of Boston declares free parking at City-operated meters,
usually on the Saturdays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve.
