The Massachusetts Port Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration announced today that all mission critical systems at Logan Airport are Y2K compliant and the authority expects a seamless transition into the new millennium. Being prepared is business as usual at Massport, said Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham. As an agency that owns and operates air, land, and sea transport facilities, safety is always our number one priority. Massport is built around a continuum of contingency plans and practice drills. Massport has been working on Year 2000 readiness since 1996. Over the past three years the authority completed a detailed analyses of operations, a system compliance program involving more than 300 systems, and a third party evaluation program involving hundreds of vendors, suppliers and business partners. In addition to its system compliance and third party outreach and evaluation efforts, 126 contingency plans have been developed for all of the authority's facilities, including Logan Airport, the Port of Boston, the Tobin Bridge, and Hanscom Field. Massport will also have five teams composed of public safety, aviation, and facility specialists stationed at each of Logans terminals. These 10-person teams will assess and test critical and high priority systems during the early morning on January 1, 2000. Francis Anglin, Massport's Director of Information Services and Telecommunications, said, "Our comprehensive approach to meeting the Year 2000 challenge, which included analyses of those business processes, systems and outside parties upon which we rely, makes us very confident that the authority's facilities and operations will continue to function safely through the Year 2000 transition period. Massport will operate a Y2K Command Center with 40 staff from various Massport units beginning December 31 at 6:00 pm through January 3, 2000. From the command center, Massport staff will interact with state and federal authorities to monitor potential problems. Massport will also connect with airports around the world via videolink to assess how other facilities deal with potential Y2K issues. The first link will be with the airport in Melbourne Australia followed by a connection to Heathrow in London. Once Massport has assessed any impacts of Y2K at Logan the information will be shared with airports to the west of the Eastern Standard time zone. The Y2K command center structure is based on what is typically done to oversee Massport operations during a heavy snowfall or strong storm. For more information on Massports Y2K program, log onto www.massport.com. Starting at 12:00 pm on December 31, 1999. Media can contact Massport communications staff at (617) 561-1818. After 6:00 pm, media should use (617) 568-7532 through the weekend. |
