Massport Board approves Buckingham as next Executive Director

The Massachusetts Port Authority Board today voted to approve Virginia Buckingham as the Authoritys next executive director. Buckingham will succeed Peter Blute who resigned on August 18.

Buckingham was tapped by Governor Paul Cellucci and Lt. Governor Jane Swift to run Massport, which owns and operates Logan International Airport, the Port of Boston, the Tobin Bridge and Hanscom Field.

Ginnys understanding of the complex issues facing Massport coupled with her strong management skills is a valuable asset to Massport. Her involvement in the effort to build a new runway at Logan ensures we will continue to move forward without missing a beat, said Mark Robinson, Chairman of the Massport Board. She is the right person to refocus the Authority on the important work that needs to get done and keep the major Massport projects on-track.

Buckingham was formerly Chief of Staff for Cellucci and Swift, a position she had held since being appointed in 1997 by then-Governor William Weld. As Chief of Staff she oversaw the operations of state government and advised the Governor and Lt. Governor on a wide variety of issues. In 1996 Buckingham served as campaign manager for Welds bid for U.S. Senate. From 1994 through 1995, she was press secretary to Weld and then-Lt.Governor Cellucci.

Joining Buckingham at Massport as Deputy Executive Director is current Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor Cellucci and Lt. Governor Swift, Russell D. Aims. Aims has served in that capacity since 1993 and as Acting Chief of Staff during Buckinghams recent maternity leave.

Buckingham is expected to officially start at Massport on September 20.
