Massport's Thanksgiving Discount a Huge Success; Over 60,000 use Logan public transportation services during Thanksgiving

Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham today announced that more than 60,000 people used Logan public transportation services to and from Logan during the recent holiday due to Massports first ever Thanksgiving discount. The half-price discount on round-trip fares was available for all three Logan Express services, Logan Direct, the Rowes Wharf Water Shuttle and Harbor Express from November 15-29.

"The Thanksgiving discount was successful both in terms of increasing ridership on public transportation, and in preventing a week of gridlock traffic conditions during Logans peak travel period," said Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham. "We kept our commitment to our neighbors to do more to reduce traffic and pollution at and around Logan Airport."

The half-price discount resulted in a dramatic increases in ridership on all of the participating services. Logan Express services surged during the two-week discount promotion. Preliminary Logan Express ridership numbers for the two-week period are:
  • Braintree: Over 20,000 passengers carried, an increase of 11% over last year; over 3,000 discount tickets sold.
  • Framingham: Over 19,000 passengers carried, an increase of 20%; over 4,000 discount tickets sold.
  • Woburn: Over 10,000 passengers carried, an increase of 10%; over 2,000 discount tickets sold.
In addition to Logan Express, thousands more utilized the three additional transportation services that participated in the promotion. The Rowes Wharf Water Shuttle carried 5,000 passengers, a 27% increase over the same two week period last year; and Harbor Express carried 4,000 passengers, 10% more passengers than the previous year. In addition, the MBTA carried over 30,000 passengers to Logan the day before Thanksgiving, an increase of 4% over last year. The numbers are not yet available for Logan Direct.

The discount pilot program was offered during the Thanksgiving holiday season because it is traditionally the busiest time for Logans roadways, terminal, and parking garages. "We made it easy and inexpensive for people to use public transportation, resulting in significantly reduced traffic congestion," said Buckingham. 'The incentive program accomplished our goal of getting travelers out of their cars and into high occupancy vehicle transportation. We will continue to develop innovative programs and services that make getting to and from Logan easier for travelers, and reduce the number of cars on our neighborss streets."
