Logan Named One of the Top Five Kid-Friendly Airports

Massport today announced that Logan International Airport was selected as one of the top five kid-friendly airports in the country by Parents Magazine. Logan was selected for providing ample nursery facilities throughout the airport, the Kidport educational play spaces and public art geared to children. The list was unveiled in this months issue

We recognize the importance of serving the air travel industry's growing family market, said Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham. We are always looking for ways to make Logan more consumer-friendly.

Logan Airport was among the first airports in the country to recognize the need to provide traveling families with a place for them to relax and burn off a little energy before a long flight. Massport constructed the first Kidport in 1987 in conjunction with the major renovation of Terminal C. Massport enlisted the assistance of the Boston Children's Museum in planning a waiting space devoted entirely to the needs of families traveling with children. Subsequently, as part of Massport's recent renovation of Terminal A, a second "Kidport" play space was installed in 1995.

In November 1997, the Childrens Museum opened a refurbished Kidport on the upper level of Terminal C along with a store. The new and improved Kidport offers a comfortable waiting area for families complete with hands-on exhibits for children to provide an educational experience relating to aviation and travel. The play space includes an interactive airplane cockpit, a baggage claim slide, a toddler and infant play area, information on fun places for families to visit within Greater Boston and a Whats Outside window display which allows families to observe many of the daily airport activities.

In addition to Kidport, Parents Magazine cited kinetic sculptures in Terminal C as a draw for kids and adults. The sculptures, created by New York artist George Rhoads, consist of two glass cubes, 9 feet on a side, and offer an encounter with the whimsical antics of lacrosse balls, seen and heard in a maze of ramps, runways, bridges, jumps and chutes. In 1997 Massport permanently installed one of the sculptures in the Terminal C Kidport and the second piece is located in the main terminal on the upper level of Terminal C.

Logan was also lauded for the availability of nurseries and infant changing rooms. There are currently 11 separate infant changing rooms at Logan and nearly all the mens and womens restrooms are equipped with a baby changing station.

Other airports on the top five kid-friendly list include: Chicago OHare International, Pittsburgh International, Salt Lake City International and San Francisco International Airport.
