Massport Offers Holiday Discount on Logan Express; Round-Trip Fares Slashed in Half

Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham today announced that Massport will offer half-off round trip fares on all three Logan Express services during the December holidays. Effective December 20 - January 4, the purchase of a round trip ticket, normally $14.00, will cost only $7.00.

Massport offered the discount fares during the Thanksgiving holiday to entice more travelers to leave their car in the driveway and use high occupancy vehicle (HOV) transportation to get to and from Logan. The highly successful Thanksgiving discount resulted in an 10-20% increase in ridership on Logan Express and is credited with reducing congestion in the local neighborhoods streets around Logan and relieving gridlock traffic at the airport during the busiest travel week of the year.

Its clear the Thanksgiving discount was successful both in terms of increasing ridership on public transportation, and in easing traffic conditions during one of Logans peak travel periods, said Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham. I want to build on that success by offering the discount during the busy December holidays.

In order to take advantage of the Logan Express round trip discount, passengers must be dropped-off at the Logan Express site (kiss & ride), where they will receive a coupon for half-off a round trip fare. To accommodate the expected increase in ridership, Massport will have extra buses on standby. Last year during the same two-week period, approximately 47,000 people used Logan Express.

This program is a win for the environment, our neighbors and the millions of travelers who use Logan, said Buckingham. As successful as this program has been, we will not rest on our laurels. We will continue to look for innovative ways to increase HOV ridership to and from Logan.

The first Logan Express opened in Braintree in 1986 as part of a mitigation agreement Massport made to increase HOV ridership. An additional Logan Express service opened in Framingham later that year and the Woburn Logan Express began in 1993. Last year, Logan Express carried over a million passengers. Massport plans to site a fourth Logan Express on the North Shore.
