Regionalization of Air Traffic, Shuttle America Expands Commercial Service at Hanscom

Shuttle America today began operating increased commercial service from Hanscom Field in Bedford, boosting the number of flights to 10 round-trips daily. The regional airline now offers flights to Buffalo, Wilmington, Trenton and Hartford. Inaugurated in September, Shuttle Americas service is expanding to meet current demands.

"As general aviation and commercial air service increases throughout New England, there is simply no reason every one of those flights must take off and land over Boston-area neighborhoods," said Massport CEO and Executive Director Virginia Buckingham. "Massport is committed to a regional approach toward air travel. Our next goal is to build on our success at Worcester Airport."

On October 20, Massport announced an operating agreement with Worcester Airport in an effort to add central Massachusetts airport to the list of thriving regional air facilities that includes Manchester Airport and Providences T.F. Green Airport. On the same day, Governor Cellucci announced that Delta would add to Worcesters commercial schedule with two flights daily to Atlanta. Atlanta is Deltas main hub and offers access to 125 other locations. Massport is continuing to focus on expanding service at Worcester Airport to reduce growth at Logan Airport.

Using Worcester Airport as a reliever facility for Logan is key to Cellucci and Lieutenant Governor Swifts regional transportation strategy for New England and is aimed at easing the burden on Logan and utilizing intermodal assets throughout the region. Cellucci recently signed legislation improving Route 3 to Manchester Airport and has filed legislation to build a direct rail link to T.F. Green Airport in Providence. In addition, Amtrack is set to begin high speed train service between Boston and New York City.
