Midyear Cargo Volumes Show Continued Growth in Port of Boston
Cargo volumes in the Port of Boston for the first half of 1999 show steady growth over the same period last year. Container traffic through the Port of Boston has risen across the board with overall container tonnage handled rising nearly 15% from 1998. While total box numbers climbed roughly 8% over 1998, import tonnage rose nearly 14% and export tonnage increased by over 20%. The growth in exports is largely a result of new direct outbound ocean carrier service from Boston to Europe.
Automobile imports in the port continued to rise with midyear vehicle projections representing an over 17% increase from 1998 to 1999. 37,351 vehicles are expected to pass through the port by the end of June 1999 as compared to 31,706 for the same period ending in June 1998. In 1998, Massport processed nearly 75,000 vehicles and anticipates this will reach close to 100,000 in the year 2000.
