 News Massport to Fund $420,000 for Summer Jobs; $50,000 Earmarked for the City of Boston’s Summer Jobs Program June 27, 2006 In an effort to help address the shortage of jobs for area youth, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced today that it will provide $370,700 to fund summer jobs for up to 269 young people in 6 communities as part of its annual Summer Jobs Program. Massport also announced an additional grant of $50,000 to support the City of Boston’s Summer Jobs Program. Massport’s Summer Jobs Program dates back to the recession of the early 1990s when summer employment was scarce. The program, designed to assist civic and social service agencies in neighboring communities, provides much needed funds to support youth programs and summer employment. This year’s program will support more than 44 agencies and 71 individual summer programs. Massport’s Summer Jobs Program has allowed several agencies to remain viable and operational and to continue to provide much needed services. "Summer jobs are vital to the development of our young people,” said Massport CEO Craig P. Coy. “What makes this program important and necessary is that it touches the young people immediately and gives them options and an avenue other than the streets to spend the summer months. Funding goes directly to the agencies that support our community. Agencies like the East Boston Social Center, South Boston’s Tynan Community Center, the Boys and Girls Club of Charlestown and the Chelsea Collaborative are examples of organizations that really make a difference in the lives of our young people and strive for the well being of our community.” In the past four years under Craig Coy’s leadership, Massport has donated $1.5 million toward its summer jobs program, as well as an additional $200,000 to the City of Boston’s program. “Massport once again has stepped up to the plate to provide Boston’s youth with the opportunity for summer employment. This generous grant will give our kids the chance to learn skills that they will need in their future employment including the importance of teamwork,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “The funding we receive from Massport provides supervised and educational employment opportunities for the youth of South Boston. The summer jobs program is a key component in prevention and education," said Brian Van Dorpe, Executive Director of the South Boston Neighborhood House. "We are grateful to Massport for their past and continued support of the South Boston community and appreciate the resources available again this summer so we can continue to provide the families of South Boston with a safe, enriching summer." Massport’s Community Summer Jobs Program provides funding to agencies in the following communities: Charlestown, Chelsea, East Boston, South Boston, Revere and Winthrop.
