Massport Teams Up with Piers Park Sailing Center in East Boston to Connect Kids to Boston Harbor; The 2006 Youth Sailing Season Casts Off with Sponsorship
June 16, 2006
WHAT: A "Hoisting of the Sails" event to unveil Massport's corporate sponsorship that will ensure Piers Park Sailing Center continues to "Connect Kids to Boston Harbor." Area youth will showcase new sails that outfit the Center's ten Sonar fleet, while showing off their seafaring acumen by sailing out to the edge of the inner harbor. Guests are invited to sail along for the short regatta while enjoying some of the best views in Boston!
WHO: Piers Park Sailing Center (PPSC) is a non-profit community sailing facility on the East Boston waterfront that offers free programs to youth all over greater Boston. Kids work closely with instructors, and learn everything from sailing basics to advanced racing, boat maintenance, and navigation. Besides learning to sail, kids learn how to work as a team, build self-confidence, gain leadership and character skills, and develop a deeper appreciation for the sea and its natural surroundings.
It costs the Center about $500 to give each kid two weeks of sailing, and Massport's involvement will be able to underwrite about 13% of those costs. Constructed by Massport in 1995, Piers Park is 6.5 acres and 2000 feet of waterfront. From 1995 though 2001 Massport provided a base level of funding and the physical infrastructure for the community sailing facility. During that time the popularity of the program increased steadily.
