 News Completion of the Tobin Bridge Upper Roadway Resurfacing Project; Resurfacing project complete ahead of schedule, all lanes open September 2, 2006 The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced today that milling and paving of the mile stretch of the upper roadway from the toll plaza to the end of the Tobin Bridge in Charlestown is complete and all lane restrictions have been removed. Line painting will take place during the overnight hours from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. beginning Wednesday, September 6 through Friday, September 9, 2006 with alternating lane closures. Originally, the $1.2 million Tobin Bridge Deck Rehab Project was scheduled to take place over an 8-week period in July, but due to the unexpected tunnel closures, and re-routing of traffic in and out of Boston the timetable was modified and condensed to minimize the disruption period while expediting the work. The Tobin Memorial Bridge was erected between 1948 and 1949 and opened to traffic in 1950. At 2 miles long, the Tobin is the largest bridge in New England. With three travel lanes northbound on its lower level and three lanes southbound on the upper level, it is the critical link that connects North Shore residents and businesses to the larger economy. Each day 75,000, vehicles travel over the Tobin Bridge. |
