Tobin Bridge to Repave Lower Roadway from Toll Plaza to 4th Street Off Ramp; Work Scheduled to begin on October 11, 2005

October 3, 2005

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) announced today that preparation for lower roadway construction on the Tobin Memorial Bridge is under way as part of its ongoing effort to maintain one of the regions most historic bridges for the safe and smooth transit of the traveling public.

The $1 million project includes milling and repaving of a one mile stretch of the lower roadway from the old tolls to the 4th Street off ramp in Chelsea. Variable message signs with updated lane closure and merge information will be strategically placed for the publics convenience. Commuters are advised to check traffic advisories and local and major media outlets for scheduled lane closure changes and project status reports.

The project is scheduled to begin on October 11, and is expected to be ongoing 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for approximately four to six weeks. To ease the impact on Chelsea residents and businesses, milling work will be scheduled for the daytime hours and roadway repaving during the evening. Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact Joe Rull at Massports Office of Government and Community Affairs at 617-568-3711 or by e-mail at jrull@massport.com.
