Massport Approves Compromise Fee Increases; 25-cent Taxi Fee Increase This Year; FastLane Discount Offered to Tobin Bridge Commuters
January 15, 2004
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) Board today voted to implement compromise increases in ground transportation fees at Logan International Airport and tolls on the Tobin Memorial Bridge. After a productive public hearing on ground transportation fees last week, Massport limited airport taxi fee increases to $0.50 per trip to be implemented over two years. Starting April 4, 2004, taxis will be charged $0.25 more -- $1.75 instead of $1.50 per trip -- with the fee increasing another $0.25 in 2005 to $2.00 per trip. The ground transportation fee increases for limos, vans, and buses were also reduced from the original proposal and will be phased in over two years.
The Tobin Bridge tolls will increase by $1 (from $2 to $3) effective April 4, 2004, but Massport will offer a $0.50 discount for FastLane users. The discount comes after discussions with elected officials including North Shore lawmakers and is based on feedback from the public hearings held in December 2003.
The new rates and tolls enable Massport to continue its investment in customer service and modern facilities while accommodating the cost concerns of our customers, said Massport CEO Craig P. Coy.
The ground transportation fees fund transportation services and infrastructure at Logan Airport, including improved access roadways and the taxi and limo pools.
The Tobin Bridge toll revenue is used for bridge operation and maintenance costs and Big Dig payments. During the next ten years, Massport will invest an estimated $68 million in major capital improvements to the bridge including steel and concrete repairs, lead paint removal, repaving, and improved signage. Many of the improvements will enhance public safety and security, reduce roadway noise, and provide a smoother ride for motorists.
