Piers Park to Host a Community Celebration; Massport announces free family fun for all

June 1, 2004

On June 12th, from 10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m., the magnificent Piers Park will host a variety of fun-filled activities in celebration of maritime history and its legendary ship building father, Donald McKay. From free sailboat rides to rowing lessons to historic trolley tours to refreshments and nautical-themed entertainment, this day promises enjoyment for the whole family.

Piers Park is a public open space that is owned and operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority. Nationally recognized for its sprawling walkways and architectural amenities, it is situated in the heart of East Bostons waterfront and offers breathtaking views of the Boston skyline. This six-acre parcel is the horticultural envy of most neighborhood parks, boasting lush green grounds and a variety of deciduous trees, ornamental shrubs and grasses. The pristine Piers Park is the pride and joy of local East Boston residents.

It is also home to Piers Park Sailing Center (PPSC), the popular local sailing club credited with introducing the recreational art of sailing to thousands of adults, children and disabled persons not only from surrounding neighborhoods, but from well beyond. Piers Park Sailing Center is providing free sailboat rides on Saturday.

This years Seaport Festival marks the tenth anniversary of the award-winning Piers Park and the 150th anniversary of East Boston shipbuilder Donald McKays launch of the elegant clippership Lightening. Donald McKay designed and built seven of the worlds eleven ships ever claimed to sail more than 400 miles in a day. Lightening was one of these proud ships.

This years festival will feature a new twist, with several awards granted by the Massachusetts Port Authority to students of the Umana Barnes School. Through a competition organized by community activist and former schoolteacher, Fran Rowan, one winner each from an historical essay writing and oratory competition will receive a gift from Massport CEO Craig Coy at Saturdays ceremony.

Folks are invited to join the many organized activities planned for the day. Among the festivities planned for Saturday will be: tours and demonstrations aboard tall ships Formidable and Poincare, the Umana Barnes chorus singing sea chanteys and ballads, dancing by the Beverly Richards dance troupe, nautical games and crafts, knot-tying, paper sailboat folding, scrimshaw, bead-stringing, flag making and tracings of Donald McKays ship models.
