Log On At Logan! Wireless Internet Access Lands at Logan Airport

June 23, 2004

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), in conjunction with the Advanced Wireless Group (AWG), today announced that travelers at Bostons Logan International Airport may now access the Internet wirelessly through the new Logan Wi-Fi System. Travelers with wireless enabled devices can access the Internet and a new free web portal, www.loganwifi.com, throughout all of the Logan terminals.

Travelers can now stay connected while they are at Logan without having to search out hotspots or dataports, said Massport CEO Craig Coy. Whether they want to surf the net or send an email, theyll have one less thing to pack for their trip through Logan Airport --- a wire for their computer.

The Wi-Fi connection is available throughout the airport; from curbside check-in, to the gate areas, concessions, and baggage claim. Travelers with wireless enabled laptops will have access to a wide variety of free content areas including news headlines, sports, travel, and entertainment. They will also have free access to Massport's web site including Flight Tracker, Airport Monitor radar and dining and shopping information. Travelers will also have the option of paying $7.95 for 24 hours of access to the public Internet to check email and surf the Internet while at the airport. Discussions are also underway with several Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) for customers with monthly subscriptions to access the Internet using the Logan Wi-Fi System.

As part of Massports plan to offer reliable, consistent and ubiquitous Wi-Fi service to passengers, airlines and concessionaires at the airport, AWG is serving as a neutral Wi-Fi host operator. In addition to offering public Internet access, the Wi-Fi system will also be available for use by airlines and other tenants to use in support of their normal operational functions including, baggage reconciliation, roving ticket agents, inventory control, and company network access. Further, the Logan Wi-Fi system is robust and flexible enough to support users of many different wireless service providers. People want access to the Internet wherever they are, not just where their wireless service provider has chosen to install a hotspot, said Scott Phillips, President of Electronic Media Systems and a partner in AWG.

Signs are posted throughout Logan Airport advising travelers that wireless Internet access is available. AWG has also established a hotline to assist travelers who want to connect to the internet via the new Wi-Fi system at Logan Airport. Additional information can be found at www.loganwifi.com.

AWG is also working to secure sponsorship of the public Internet portal at Logan. Travelers have specific needs for information and our goal is to attract corporate sponsors in order to provide broader access to that information, said Todd McCormack, CEO of TWIi and a partner in AWG.

As part the information available to travelers within the portal, Boston.com is providing news headlines, and CNN is providing access to live video streaming from CNN's Airport Network. In the near future, CNN news headlines will also appear on the Wi-Fi portal.

"CNN is recognized the world over as the brand that connects people with world events--wherever they are and whenever they want," said Debbie Cooper, Senior Vice President, Turner Private Networks. "This venture will allow us to extend the CNN brand onto today's platform and continue building the relationship with today's traveler that we started 13 years ago with CNN Airport Network."

"Business travelers need to stay to up-to-the-minute on the latest news and information, and access to Boston.com featuring news headlines from The Boston Globe will provide that connection," said Lisa DeSisto, vice president and general manager, Boston.com.
