News Tobin Motorists Can Save 50 Cents With FAST LANE Transponder March 19, 2004 Beginning on April 4, 2004, The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) is offering a 50-cent discount to all motorists who use the FAST LANE when traveling the Tobin Bridge. With new toll rates set to take effect on the Tobin Bridge as of April 4th, Massport made the discount available to benefit the motorists traveling to Boston from the North Shore. While the regular toll rate will increase from $2.00 to $ 3.00 for standard automobiles, those equipped with a FAST LANE transponder will pay only $2.50. For more information or to obtain an application for a FAST LANE transponder, call the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority at 1-877-627-7745 or visit their website at www.masspike.com. Toll revenue from the Tobin Bridge is used to meet the bridges financial, operational, safety and security obligations. During the next ten years, Massport will invest an estimated $68 million in major capital improvements to the 2.5-mile bridge including steel and concrete repairs, lead paint removal, painting, redecking and improved signage. Many of the improvements will enhance public safety and security, reduce roadway noise, and provide a smoother ride for motorists. Toll revenue from the Tobin Bridge is also used to contribute to the Central Artery /Tunnel project. Also new to the bridge will be the addition of safety gates in all toll lanes. The safety gates will be installed first in the FAST LANES and eventually in all toll lanes. These state-of-the-art gates are designed to rise in 9/10ths of a second, keeping traffic flowing smoothly and safely. Safety gates are also in use at FAST LANES within the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York. The safety gates are being installed to discourage speeding on the Tobin bridge and to help maintain safe crossings.
