Logan Hosts Teen-Curated Art Exhibit; YouthReach Exhibit Showcases Local Talent

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) and the Urban Arts Institute at the Mass College of Art joined dozens of young artists in unveiling their work in a new exhibit at Logan International Airport. The MCC YouthReach Art Show is a teen-curated, teen art show with works drawn from all areas of the state. Massport and the Urban Arts Institute at Massachusetts College of Art are cosponsors of the exhibit.

"We are pleased to welcome the MCC YouthReach artists to Logan," said Massport CEO Craig Coy. "Not only does this exhibit enrich the airport, but it also helps educate the traveling public about the importance of access to the arts for teens."

The exhibit was selected to receive funding from Massport via the Impacted Community Grant Program. Community agencies from East Boston and South Boston are participating in the program. After its run at Logan, the 2003 YouthReach Show will move to the Massachusetts Statehouse in Boston during the second week of September.

Artworks selected were drawn from the more than 20 art-based youth development programs funded by MCC's nationally recognized YouthReach program. The YouthReach Initiative provides grants to arts organizations and other community groups to support arts programs for young people in need.

"People who expect this exhibition to be filled with 'amateur art' are in for a big surprise," said YouthReach Program Coordinator Alexandra Rogers. "Logan's corridor will positively burst with fresh work by serious young artists who have something to say and deserve to be heard. Through programs like this one, we are proving that art is an effective model for youth development and we are creating, at the same time, a compelling body of work." The exhibition features works based on the ideas of community, ethnicity, self-identity and more.

The exhibit will be on display at Logan International Airport from Thursday, July 10 through Sunday, Aug. 31, 2003. The exhibition is free to the public (including traveling and non-traveling).
