East Boston's Piers Park Receives High Acclaim; Beautiful Park is Awarded For Accessible Design

December 3, 2003

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced that East Boston's Piers Park was recognized for "Excellence in Universal Design: Great Places Fit for People." The award is one of eight awards sponsored by the joint team of Adaptive Environments, the Boston Society of Architects and the American Institute of Architects (AIA), New York.

Piers Park is a 6.5-acre parcel located in East Boston's scenic waterfront and overlooking the Boston skyline. The awarding jury noted that the park was specifically lauded for including local history, using existing dilapitated piers, and meeting the needs of visitors of all ages and abilities.

Piers Park features spacious strolling walkways, a 600-foot lined pier with pavilions and benches, many species of trees and ornamental shrubs, an amphitheatre, and a children's playground. The park also houses Piers Park Sailing Center, a popular community boating facility that offers adult, youth and adaptive sailing programs. The entire park and its sailing center are handicapped accessible.

Massport built Piers Park in 1995 with consultation from a 19-member group of East Boston residents known as the East Boston Piers Project Advisory Committee (Piers PAC). Pressley Associates of Cambridge designed the park at Massport's direction to create more green space in East Boston. Design and construction of the park cost $17 million.

Since being built, Piers Park has received several design awards from prestigious institutions including the Boston Society of Landscape Architects, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and the Brick Industry Association.
