 News East Boston Waterfront Development Moves Forward; Massport Land Will Enhance Neighborhood, Support Maritime Use APRIL 8, 2003 The long-awaited redevelopment of East Boston's Pier One and the neighboring marina and shipyard received state environmental approval this week, clearing a major hurdle as the project moved one step closer to becoming a reality. The 68 acres of waterfront property, including over 40 acres of watersheet, is owned by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). The proposed development is slated to provide 585 units of housing, landscaped open space and public areas, a refurbished shipyard and an expanded and revitalized marina. In addition, the development will retain active maritime industrial uses on Pier One. The project, being developed by the team of Roseland Property Company and Sea Chain Marine LLC, is the culmination of years of community work, interaction and involvement and is consistent with efforts to expand the City of Boston's housing supply and to promote an active waterfront. "By working together with neighborhood leaders and elected officials, we have planned a landmark project that will reconnect the East Boston community with the harbor," said Massport CEO Craig P. Coy. "With housing, pedestrian connections to the East Boston Greenway, an extension of the Boston Harbor Harborwalk, and proposed water transportation service, this property will enhance and support an active shipyard and a premier marina. I am proud that Massport is associated with a project that can maintain and support vital maritime uses while building a community-inspired development." The next step for the Roseland/Sea Chain development is to secure Chapter 91 approval from the state's Department of Environmental Protection. |
