Logan Runway Receives Court OK

November 19, 2003

A new runway at Logan International Airport, expected to slash delays by almost 25%, has cleared a major legal hurdle with a decision by a Suffolk Superior Court judge. The decision, issued Tuesday, November 18, 2003 modified an almost 30 year injunction and permits the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) to proceed with this vital infrastructure investment.

An extensive eight-year public process, involving more than 100 public meetings with over 3,000 participants, culminated in approval for the runway by state environmental regulators in 2001 and by the federal government in 2002. The unprecedented public process led to several mitigation initiatives and compromises such as extended comment periods, funded community aviation consultants, an additional year-long review and study, and an FAA guarantee to operate the runway only during northwest and southeast winds above 10 knots.

The additional runway is one part of a $4.4 billion modernization of Logan Airport that has resulted in new passenger terminals, elevated walkways, a hotel, an expanded parking garage, and improved roadways.
