Logan Baggage Screening System Team Wins Carballo Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) team that led the nation in designing and building a 100% in-line baggage screening system at Logan International Airport received the Manuel Carballo Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service from Governor Mitt Romney today at a State House ceremony. The nine-member team directed Massport's unprecedented and nationally-recognized effort to build the first permanent in-line screening system at a major U.S. international airport.

"We are very proud of this team and honored by Governor Mitt Romney's recognition of these dedicated professionals," said Massport CEO Craig P. Coy. "Airport officials from around the world have come to Logan to see our baggage system at work. The Massport team has helped make Logan a recognized leader in safety and security and ensured that our customers have the best screening system possible."

The team developed a design and construction program that enabled Logan to become the only major airport in the country to meet the federally-mandated baggage screening deadline of December 31, 2002 with a permanent in-line solution. The $146 million system consists of 85,000 square feet of new bag rooms, 42,000 square feet of renovated bag rooms, 7 new power substations, 2.8 miles of bag belt and more than 300 electric motors. It is estimated that two and half year's worth of work was accomplished in less than 10 months.

In addition to meeting the deadline, the team developed a system that expedited the processing of airline passengers, took up no ticketing hall space, and minimized staffing requirements.
