It's Working for Chelsea; Tobin Bridge's Limited Access to Beacon Street Ramp Effective
8/29/2001
Nearly a month after Massport reopened the Tobin Bridge's Beacon
Street Ramp with limited vehicle access, officials report positive
traffic results.
Since August 6, access to the ramp has been limited to private
passenger vehicles, taxis, buses and commercial vehicles under eight
tons, as a safety measure for neighborhood residents. Larger vehicles
are being directed into Chelsea by Truck Detour signage located on all
major Tobin Bridge access and egress roads including Routes 93, 99, 16
and 60.
"The drivers of vehicles over eight tons are getting the message, "
said Mary Jane O'Meara, director of the Tobin Bridge. "Fewer than 200
large trucks have been stopped by police for using the Beacon Street
ramp during this period."
Prior to Massport limiting access, up to 1,000 trucks used the ramp
daily before it was closed in May. In addition to signage to get the
message out, Massport provided handouts with access details and maps
of alternative routes to drivers, trucking companies and freight
carriers.
Massport is conducting a three-month trial period which is being
monitored 24-hours by State and local police. The traffic plan is
subject to change based on community safety and needs.
"We are adding more signage including a reflective sign on the
bridge, 400 feet from the ramp exit, warning of a stop light at the
base," said O'Meara.
Additional advisory yellow signs, to distinguish them from
construction signs, also will be installed along Route I 93 North.
