 News Shuttle America Carried More Than 15,000 In September; Regionalization is Meeting Demand and Easing Pressure on Logan 10/13/2000 Business continues to boom at Hanscom Field despite Shuttle America's stalled bid to start service to New York City's LaGuardia Airport. Massport officials reported today that 15,187 passengers took advantage of Shuttle America's inexpensive and convenient service in September. Passenger numbers are expected to climb further if Shuttle America receives approval to add the much-anticipated service between Hanscom and LaGuardia Airport. If approved by the FAA, Shuttle America could begin service to New York as early as October 23, 2000. "Regionalization means using all of our assets to accommodate the traveling public's needs", said Massport CEO and Executive Director Virginia Buckingham. "Whether it's the coming Acela service, flights from Hansom to Trenton, Greensboro, and Buffalo, or the popular Worcester to Atlanta flights, today's traveler is looking at more options than ever - that's good news for Logan Airport and Boston area neighborhoods. Massport will continue to seek and promote alternatives to Logan Airport." Shuttle America inaugurated service in late September of 1999 and quickly expanded to meet air travel needs in the suburbs surrounding Hansom Field. The regional airline now offers 11 daily flights to Buffalo, Trenton and Greensboro. Shuttle America has applied for and is awaiting final FAA permission to start service between Hanscom and LaGuardia Airport in New York City. Boston to New York is the largest market at Logan Airport, responsible for 10-percent of Logan's domestic passengers every year. |
