Massports February Vacation Discount a Huge Success; Over 35,000 use Logan Public Transportation Services.

3/10/2000

Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham today announced that more than 35,000 people took advantage of a half-price discount on Logan public transportation services during the recent February school vacation. The half-price discount on round-trip fares was available for all three Logan Express services, Logan Direct and the Rowes Wharf Water Shuttle from February 18-27.

"This reinforces our belief that we can get more people to leave their cars at home during peak travel periods," said Massport Executive Director and CEO Virginia Buckingham. "The right combination of convenient services at a discount rate will draw people to HOV services and off of neighborhood streets."

The half-price discount resulted in a dramatic increase in ridership on all of the participating services. Logan Express services surged during the two-week discount promotion. Preliminary Logan Express ridership numbers for the two-week period are:
  • Braintree: Over 14,000 passengers carried, an increase of 23.9% over last year.
  • Framingham: Over 12,630 passengers carried, an increase of 28%.
  • Woburn: Over 6,638 passengers carried, an increase of 11.4%.
In addition to Logan Express, many more travelers utilized the Rowes Wharf Water Shuttle and Logan Direct bus service. The Rowes Wharf Water Shuttle carried nearly 2,000 passengers, an 11% increase over the same period last year. Numbers are not yet available for Logan Direct.

The discount program was offered during the February school vacation because it is traditionally one of the busiest times for Logans roadways, terminals, and parking garages.
